In mijn dissertatie onderzoek ik hoe het eigentijdse gebruik van het verleden een rol speelt in de vorming van collectieve identiteiten en gemeenschapsculturen. Ik analyseer hoe merkgemeenschappen worden gevormd in de musea van Europese automerken, hoe sciencefictionmusea Star Wars en Jules Verne cultureel legitimeren, en hoe post-communistische musea onderdeel zijn van een cultuur-politieke strijd om de juiste interpretatie van het verleden. Daarvoor hanteer ik een cultuursociologische visie door museumpresentaties als ‘cultural performances’ te benaderen, een aanpak die ik heb ontwikkeld aan de hand van het werk van de Amerikaanse cultuursocioloog Jeffrey Alexander. In my dissertation I explore the question how the contemporary use of the past takes part in in the formation of collective identities and community cultures. I analyse how European car manufacturers construct brand communities, how science fiction museums legitimize Star Wars and Jules Verne, and how cultural-political struggles about the 'correct' interpretation of the communist past return in Eastern-European museums. For this I use cultural sociology by approaching museums as 'social performances', a theoretical framework based on the work of the American sociologist Jeffrey Alexander.
